在希伯來文的舊約中，靈一詞有三種區別：
- 帶有定冠詞的靈，將靈描述為一個存在體。(見第1章)
- 沒有冠詞的靈，描述聖靈的膏抺。
- “ELOHIM的靈”和“伊瓦的靈”描述“伊瓦的手”。(第6章)
這三條規則也同樣適用在希臘文的新約，除了在五旬節以前，當神是主的時候，神的靈以冠詞來形容以外。使徒們用希臘文的冠詞來描述主的靈，和作為一個存在體的基督的靈。
當神是「主」時，神的靈被稱作「那靈」 。在耶穌成為主以後，基督的靈被稱作「那靈」 ，而神的靈被稱作「靈」、不帶冠詞。耶穌使用「那靈」 一詞來描述在神國裡的「那靈」 。
我們怎麼能確定，在五旬節之前把基督的靈描述為「那靈」 的經文是真的在描述基督的靈、而不是神的靈呢？ 好在保羅在他的書信中解釋了這一切。
a. 「那靈」、指的是神的靈 (11次在9節經文中)
馬 太 福 音 4:1 當 時 、 耶 穌 被 那 靈 (τοῦ πνεύματος) 引 到 曠 野 、 受 魔 鬼 的 試 探 。
馬 太 福 音 12:31所 以 我 告 訴 你 們 、 人 一 切 的 罪 、 和 褻 瀆 的 話 、 都 可 得 赦 免 ． 惟 獨 褻 瀆 那 靈 (τοῦ πνεύματος)、 總 不 得 赦 免 。
馬 可 福 音 1:10 他 從 水 裡 一 上 來 、 就 看 見 天 裂 開 了 、那 靈 (τὸ πνεῦμα) 彷 彿 鴿 子 、 降 在 他 身 上 。
馬 可 福 音 1:12那 靈 (τὸ πνεῦμα) 就 把 耶 穌 催 到 曠 野 裡 去 。
路 加 福 音 4:1 耶 穌 被 那 靈 (ἐν τῷ πνεύματι) 充 滿 、 從 約 但 河 回 來 、 聖 靈 將 他 引 到 曠 野 、 四 十 天 受 魔 鬼 的 試 探 。
路 加 福 音 4:14 耶 穌 滿 有那 靈( τοῦ πνεύματος) 的 能 力 回 到 加 利 利 、 他 的 名 聲 就 傳 遍 了 四 方 。
約 翰 福 音 1:32 約 翰 又 作 見 證 說 、 我 曾 看 見 那 靈 (τὸ πνεῦμα) 彷 彿 鴿 子 、 從 天 降 下 、 住 在 他 的 身 上 。
約 翰 福 音 1:33 我 先 前 不 認 識 他 ． 只 是 那 差 我 來 用 水 施 洗 的 、 對 我 說 、 你 看 見 那 靈 (τὸ πνεῦμα) 降 下 來 、 住 在 誰 的 身 上 、 誰 就 是 用 聖 靈 施 洗 的 。
約 翰 壹 書5:7-8 並 且 有 那 靈 (τὸ πνεῦμά) 作 見 證 、 因 為 那 靈 (τὸ πνεῦμά) 就 是 真 理 。 作 見 證 的 原 來 有 三 、 就 是 那 靈 (τὸ πνεῦμά) 、 水 、 與 血 這 三 樣 也 都 歸 於 一 。(見證耶穌的三樣就是神的兒子，見約壹4:15、5:5 和約1:32-34)
b. 「那靈」、指的是基督的靈 (77次在71節經文中)

馬 太 福 音 5:3 在 那 靈 裡 (τῷ πνεύματι) 貧 窮 的 人 有 福 了 ． 因 為 天 國 是 他 們 的 。
馬 太 福 音 26:41總 要 儆 醒 禱 告 、 免 得 入 了 迷 惑 ． 那靈 (τὸ μὲν πνεῦμα) 固 然 願 意 、 肉 體 卻 軟 弱 了 。
馬 可 福 音 2:8耶 穌 在 祂 的 靈 裡 (τῷ πνεύματι αὐτοῦ) 知 道 他 們 心 裡 這 樣 議 論 、 就 說 、 你 們 心 裡 為 甚 麼 這 樣 議 論 呢 。
馬 可 福 音 8:12耶 穌 在 祂 的 靈 裡 (τῷ πνεύματι αὐτοῦ) 深 深 的 歎 息 說 、 這 世 代 為 甚 麼 求 神 蹟 呢 。 我 實 在 告 訴 你 們 、 沒 有 神 蹟 給 這 世 代 看 。
馬 可 福 音 14:38 總 要 儆 醒 禱 告 、 免 得 入 了 迷 惑 ．那 靈 (τὸ μὲν πνεῦμα) 固 然 願 意 、 肉 體 卻 軟 弱 了 。
路 加 福 音 2:27 當 他 在 那 靈 裡 (ἐν τῷ πνεύματι)、 進 入 聖 殿 ． 正 遇 見 耶 穌 的 父 母 抱 著 孩 子 進 來 、 要 照 律 法 的 規 矩 辦 理 。
約 翰 福 音 3:6 從 肉 身 生 的 、 就 是 肉 身 ． 從 那 靈 ( ἐκ τοῦ Πνεύματος) 生 的 、 就 是 靈。
約 翰 福 音 3:8 風 隨 著 意 思 吹 、 你 聽 見 風 的 響 聲 、 卻 不 曉 得 從 那 裡 來 、 往 那 裡 去 ． 凡 從 那 靈 (τοῦ πνεύματος) 生 的 、 也 是 如 此 。
約 翰 福 音 3:34 神 所 差 來 的 、 就 說 神 的 話 ． 因 為 神 賜 那 靈 (τὸ πνεῦμα) 給 他 、 是 沒 有 限 量 的 。 (在下面的經節中解釋)
約 翰 福 音 6:63 叫 人 活 著 的 乃 是 那 靈 (τὸ πνεῦμά)、 肉 體 是 無 益 的 ． 我 對 你 們 所 說 的 話 、 就 是 靈 、 就 是 生 命 。(相較於林前 15:45)
約 翰 福 音 7:39 耶 穌 這 話 是 指 著 信 他 之 人 、 要 受 那 靈 (τοῦ Πνεύματος)說 的 、 那 時 還 沒 有 賜 下[那] 靈 來 ． 因 為 耶 穌 尚 未 得 著 榮 耀 。
約 翰 福 音11:33 耶 穌 看 見 他 哭 、 並 看 見 與 他 同 來 的 猶 太 人 也 哭 、 就 在 那 靈 裡 (τῷ πνεύματι) 悲 歎 、 又 甚 憂 愁 。 (相較於羅 8:26)
約 翰 福 音 13:21 耶 穌 說 了 這 話 、 在 那 靈 裡 (τῷ πνεύματι) 憂 愁 、 就 明 說 、 我 實 實 在 在 的 告 訴 你 們 、 你 們 中 間 有 一 個 人 要 賣 我 了 。
使 徒 行 傳 2:4 他 們 就 都 被 聖 靈 充 滿 、 按 著 那 靈 (τὸ πνεῦμα) 所 賜 的 口 才 、 說 起 別 國 的 話 來 。

使 徒 行 傳 10:19 彼 得 還 思 想 那 異 象 的 時 候 、那 靈 (τὸ Πνεῦμα) 向 他 說 、 有 三 個 人 來 找 你 ．
使 徒 行 傳 11:12 那 靈 (τὸ Πνεῦμά) 吩 咐 我 和 他 們 同 去 、 不 要 疑 惑 。同 著 我 去 的 、 還 有 這 六 位 弟 兄 ． 我 們 都 進 了 那 人 的 家 ．

羅 馬 書 8:6 因 為 肉 體 的 心 是 死 ． 但 是 那 靈 (τοῦ πνεύματος) 的 心 乃 是 生 命 和 平 安。 (相較於羅 8:27; 林前 2:16)
羅 馬 書 8:9 如 果 神 的 靈 住 在 你 們 心 裡 、 你 們 就 不 屬 肉 體 、 乃 屬 [那] 靈 (ἐν πνεύματι) (或作:在靈裡)了 ． 人 若 沒 有 基 督 的 靈 、 就 不 是 屬 基 督 的 。
羅 馬 書 8:10 基 督 若 在 你 們 裡 面 、 身 體 就 因 罪 而 死 、 那 靈 (τὸ δὲ πνεῦμα) 卻 因 義 而 活 ．
羅 馬 書 8:15 你 們 所 受 的 不 是 奴 僕 的 心 、 仍 舊 害 怕 ． 所 受 的 乃 是 收 養 的 (那) 靈(或作：立為子的靈) (πνεῦμα υἱοθεσίας) 、 因 此 我 們 呼 叫 阿 爸 、 父 。
羅 馬 書 8:16 那 靈 (τὸ πνεῦμα) 與 我 們 的 靈 同 證 我 們 是 神 的 兒 女 ．
羅 馬 書 8:23 不 但 如 此 、 就 是 我 們 這 有 那 靈 (τοῦ πνεύματος) 初 結 果 子 的 、 也 是 自 己 心 裡 歎 息 、 等 候 得 著 兒 子 的 名 分 、 乃 是 我 們 的 身 體 得 贖 。
羅 馬 書 8:26 況 且 我 們 的 軟 弱 有 那 靈 (τὸ πνεῦμα) 幫 助 、 我 們 本 不 曉 得 當 怎 樣 禱 告 、 只 是 那 靈 (τὸ πνεῦμα) 親 自 用 說 不 出 來 的 歎 息 、 替 我 們 禱 告 。
羅 馬 書 8:27 鑒 察 人 心 的 、 曉 得 那 靈 (τοῦ πνεύματος) 的 意 思 ． 因 為 他 照 著 神 的 旨 意 替 聖 徒 祈 求 。
羅 馬 書 15:30 弟 兄 們 、 我 藉 著 我 們 主 耶 穌 基 督 、 又 藉 著 那 靈 (τοῦ πνεύματος) 的 愛 、 勸 你 們 與 我 一 同 竭 力 、 為 我 祈 求 神 。

以 弗 所 書 4:3 用 和 平 彼 此 聯 絡 、 竭 力 保 守 那 靈 (τοῦ πνεύματος) 所 賜 合 而 為 一 的 心 。

歌 羅 西 書 2:5 我 身 子 雖 與 你 們 相 離 、在 那 靈 裡 (τῷ πνεύματι) 卻 與 你 們 在 同 在 、 見 你 們 循 規 蹈 矩 、 信 基 督 的 心 也 堅 固 、 我 就 歡 喜 了 。
帖 撒 羅 尼 迦 前 書 5:19 不 要 銷 滅 那 靈 (τὸ πνεῦμα) 的 感 動 ．
提 摩 太 前 書4:1 那 靈 (Τὸ δὲ πνεῦμα) 明 說 、 在 後 來 的 時 候 、 必 有 人 離 棄 真 道 、 聽 從 那 引 誘 人 的 邪 靈 、 和 鬼 魔 的 道 理 。
彼 得 前 書 1:11 就 是 考 察 在 他 們 心 裡 基 督 的 靈 (πνεῦμα Χριστοῦ)、 預 先 證 明 基 督 受 苦 難 、 後 來 得 榮 耀 、 是 指 著 甚 麼 時 候 、 並 怎 樣 的 時 候 。
啟 示 錄 2:7 那 靈 (τὸ πνεῦμα) 向 眾 教 會 所 說 的 話 、 凡 有 耳 的 、 就 應 當 聽 。 得 勝 的 、 我 必 將 神 樂 園 中 生 命 樹 的 果 子 賜 給 他 喫 。

Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the holy spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit (τὸ πνεῦμα) gave them utterance.
Act 5:9 But Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to try the Spirit of the Lord (τὸ Πνεῦμα Κυρίου)? behold, the feet of them that have buried thy husband are at the door, and they shall carry thee out.
Act 6:10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit (τῷ πνεύματι) by which he spake.
Act 8:29 And the Spirit (τὸ Πνεῦμα) said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.
Act 8:39 And when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord (πνεῦμα Κυρίου) caught away Philip; and the eunuch saw him no more, for he went on his way rejoicing.
Act 10:19 And while Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit (τὸ Πνεῦμα) said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.
